Message from the Parish Priest

The Parish of Mary, Mother of God presents this site to you as a means of really getting to know about our Parish Family here in Ponders End, Enfield. For newcomers, it is a way of offering a welcome. For our 'regulars', it is intended as a source of information. For those we rarely have contact with, it comes with the hope that it might move them to become more involved with the active life of our Parish Community. It would be wonderful if we could all work together to build a friendly, loving community with the Lord at the heart of it. This, of course, is an on-going process and requires the openness and hardworking collaboration of everyone concerned.
Revd. Fr. John Shewring (Parish Priest)

Statement on Abortion by Catholic Bishops of England - Executive Summary

This statement, published by the Catholic Bishops of England, Wales and Scotland, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the 1967 UK Abortion Act, is addressed not only to Catholics of our countries, but more broadly to all people who seek to uphold the dignity of human life and protect the unborn child. Over the last fifty years, the bishops of our countries, along with many other people, have spoken consistently in favour of the intrinsic value of human life and both the good of the child in the womb and the good of the mother. This anniversary provides an opportunity to lament the loss of life due to abortion and seek a change of minds and hearts about the good of the child in the womb and the care of mothers who are pregnant. HOW TO GO TO CONFESSION:

• Examine your conscience - that is, reflect on what sins you have committed.
• When you meet the priest, begin by making the sign of the cross.
• You may say, “Bless me Father for I have sinned” if you wish.
• Tell the priest how long it is since your last confession - if you remember. If you can’t remember, say that to the priest too. Remember he is not there to judge you, but to bring the healing Sacrament of Reconciliation to you.
• List the sins you have committed - be honest and clear - there is no need to tell the whole story behind the sin either however.
• Penance - the priest will suggest something for you to do or say as a response to God’s mercy.
• The priest will then ask you to pray the Act of Contrition (Act of Sorrow).
• The priest will then give you absolution, to which you respond “Amen”.
• The priest will then likely say something like “God has freed you from your sin. Go in Peace.” To which you can respond: “Thanks be to God.”
• Don’t forget to do your penance! READ More...

New Parish Groups

The parish is calling on parishioners to consider joining the following newly formed(revived) societies in our Church:
Legion of Mary1. Legion of Mary Society
The Legion of Mary is a worldwide association of Catholics who have formed themselves into a body to be of service to the church. Mary the Immaculate is the model and through her its members seek to present Christ to everyone.

The objective is the spiritual formation of all confirmed members of the church through prayer and the lay apostolic work to realize their vocation to holiness.

Our parish Praesidium (this is what a parish Legion of Mary group is known as) is called Our Lady Seat of Wisdom. We meet each Sunday at 4pm in the Parish Hall. You are most welcome to join us.

The legion holds a weekly meeting, which begins with the invocation of the Holy Spirit followed by the recitation of the Rosary, spiritual readings, talks and a discussion... Read more about the Legion of Mary Society

Holy Father's Intentions for DEC. 2017

Christians in Asia: That Christians in Asia, bearing witness to the Gospel in word and deed, may promote dialogue, peace, and mutual understanding, especially with those of other religions.

Pope Francis has decided to keep one monthly prayer intention. He is no longer proposing an urgent prayer intention. However, on every Sunday on which he gives an Angelus Address, he asks for prayers for specific people and situations that are of deep concern to him.

Further information may be found at Pope's Worldwide Prayer Network.
